Edward VIII
Here is an article about Edward VIII.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-417388/Prince-Charmless-A-damning-portrait-Edward-VIII.html
From the time when, in 1918, he fell in love with Mrs Dudley Ward - fell, God knows, as deeply as any poor lovesick young man can fall - he was never out of the thrall of one female after another. [Socialite Freda Dudley Ward became the Prince's mistress in 1918 and their relationship lasted until 1934.]
There was always a grande affaire and, coincidentally, as I know to my cost, an unbroken series of petites affaires, contracted and consummated in whatever highways and byways of the Empire he was traversing at the moment; for example, the above-mentioned Mrs Barnes of Tanganyika.
To represent him otherwise is not only a flat perversion of the facts of his life, but an injustice to the other actors in the Abdication tragedy - the present King, Queen Mary, Stanley Baldwin, Cosmo Lang [Archbishop of Canterbury] - who knew all too well how materially his whole existence had already been made to conform to what H. G. Wells calls 'the urgency of sex', and that Mrs S. was no isolated phenomenon, but merely the current figure in an arithmetical progression that had been robustly maintained for nearly 20 years.
I shall, in all probability, be dead before the Times article is printed; but I hope sincerely that it will embody the modest emendation that I have made to it in this regard.
I have re-read all that I have written about him, probably the most spectacular, the most discussed personality with whom I shall ever be in intimate association. I can say with honesty that I have set down nothing in malice; indeed, knowing all that I do, I am amazed at my own moderation.

Re: Edward VIII
Thank you for this post. Very interesting.
Isn't Madonna's movie "WE" supposed to be released soon? I gather (from the little I've read about it) that it portrays Wallis and Edward as star-crossed lovers, etc. (I think I will take a pass.)

I will take a pass, too. I think they had a strange relationship, from everything I have read.
Re: Edward VIII
I agree that their relationship was odd -- possibly a marriage based upon replicating and trying to fulfill serious, and unmet, childhood needs on both sides, more than anything else. I have nothing against either of them, but I must say that I've never found them especially compelling or attractive either individually, or as a couple. I can see how Edward was, as the youthful Prince of Wales, an extremely charismatic and appealing personality, a "star," but his chronic interest in unavailable women must have gotten most tiresome (even back in the pre-tabloid era). I have always felt terribly sorry for the position his younger brother was put into, and feel that he showed great character and courage in the event.

Re: Edward VIII
I dislike this couple. However, is a clip of the Duke of Windsor discussing his first meeting with Wallis:
It irritates me when people try to compare this couple with Leopold III and Lilian Baels of Belgium.

Re: Edward VIII
Interesting. Wallis was from Baltimore, MD, you know. No comparison between her and Lilian Baels. And Edward bears NO resemblance at all to Leopold, not in ANY way.
