Louis d’Orléans was a member of a cadet branch of the House of Valois which put him on a course to inherit the throne of France if certain conditions were met. While he was young, he was trained in the essential skills necessary for a nobleman such as hunting, sports and martial arts to prepare him for the rigors of war, all of which required vigorous physical exercise.
