Re: Nell Gwyn, Mistress of King Charles II
My favorite story about this woman is one which you alluded to briefly in your article, when her carriage was mobbed, the 'rabble' suspecting that it housed Charles II's Catholic mistress.
Nell Gwynn soothed the tensions. "I am but the Protestant whore."
(I paraphrase).
Classy.

Hi Bunnies!
I know! That is a good one! She knew how to work a crowd.

That incident, by the way, is marvelously depicted by Emma Pierson, playing Gwynn, in the 2003 BBC mini-series Charles II: The Power and The Passion. It's worth getting the Region 2 DVD of it, as the American version chops out about an hour's worth.
You can see the scene here at about the 6:35 mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5lNvE5oIj_Y&NR=1

Yes, I've seen clips from this series but I've never buckled down to buy it yet! Inexcusable, really, since Charles II ranks as one of my favorite monarchs. Thank you!
