I read this new book Heaven in Stone and Glass by Fr. Robert Barron.  It is about the spirituality found in Gothic cathedrals.  Each chapter discusses a different feature, among them: light and dark, rose windows, our Jewish heritage, the crypt, sacred geometry, and the liturgy.  The book is short and offers a great deal in each chapter. It's a beautiful "tour" of how people in the medieval period viewed God and the world around them.
Fr. Barron has become well-known for his 10 part "Catholicism" TV series with a companion book of the same title.

Cathedrals in France readily came to mind for me since I've been there twice. (Two mentioned in the book were Notre-Dame and Chartres--both I've visited)  I've also been to non-Gothic cathedrals on the Dalmatian coast of Croatia.  Although the cathedrals were built at different time periods and their architectural design differs from western Europe, they are just as inspiring to visit.
