I never knew she was reading a book about Mary Queen of Scots.

Portrait of Marie Antoinette, Queen of France (1755-1793), three-quarter-length, seated, at the Conciergerie, Paris, in mourning, with a cameo pendant portraying the Dauphin, holding a life of Mary, Queen of Scots, a bust of Louis XVI and the Testament of 23 December 1792 on the draped table beside inscribed ‘HIS.DE LA.M. DE STUAR[T]’ (lower centre, on the book)
I never knew she was reading a book about Mary Queen of Scots.
1773 portrait
Here's a 1773 portrait of M-A (then Madame la Dauphine) as the Greek goddess Hebe from "History & Other Thoughts" today:

It's the 4th portrait as you scroll down.

Re: Marie-Antoinette in Art
Lovely. That last one is new to me!
I forget where I found this one:
Possibly from Louis XX. I think she is wearing a small coronet.

Another unique miniature.

I am wondering if Marie-Antoinette is supposed to represent Venus, the goddess of love and beauty who, according to the myth, rose out of the foam of the sea. Furthermore, coral, symbolizing joy and happiness, has a classical association with that goddess. Venus was the wife of Vulcan, god of the forge. Perhaps the potrait was a gift for Louis XVI, whom she once likened to Vulcan because of his dedication to his locksmith work. A dolphin was on the coat-of-arms of the Dauphin. I think this miniature was intended as an intimate gift from the Queen to the King to celebrate the birth of their son and heir.

Another miniature. The veiled Dauphine.

I would say she was in white mourning except for the blue sash.

Re: Marie-Antoinette in Art
One of my favorites. It was painted by Madame Lebrun after the birth of the first Dauphin, when the Queen's hair began to thin and had to be cut short.
Here are a series of portraits of the queen in a white gown and blue sash.
http://teaattrianon.blogspot.com/2012/11/white-dress-blue-sash.html
I wonder if there are enough pictures of the Queen in red to do a "Lady in Red" series?

From Vive la Reine:
http://vivelareine.tumblr.com/post/37299317358A portrait of Marie Antoinette by Elise Larrieu, commissioned during the Bourbon Restoration era.
I wonder if this painting is a copy of a Vigee-Lebrun portrait which is mentioned in memoirs: “In one [portrait of Marie Antoinette] I did her to the knees, in a pale orange-red dress, standing before a table on which she was arranging some flowers in a vase.”
Re: Marie-Antoinette in Art
Another miniature. People loved miniatures in those days.

Re: Marie-Antoinette in Art
An interesting study from Vive la Reine http://vivelareine.tumblr.com/post/39179449528:
To quote:
To quote:
The print on the [top] was published in 1781. Here, Marie Antoinette is titled Marie Antoinette, Queen of France and is depicted with both literal and figurative symbols of monarchy and her position as queen. Her visible clothing is relatively simple but adorned with symbols of her high status. She is wearing large pearl earrings, there is a row of pearls along the cuff of her bodice, and a pearled crown with a fleur-de-lis in the center sits atop her head. The garland hanging above her portrait is adorned with lilies and roses, symbols of the Bourbons and Habsburgs, along with pears, possibly a reminder to those admiring the print of the Queen’s affection for France, as the pear was sometimes used in Christian imagery as a symbol of Christ’s affection for mankind.
The print on the [bottom], published in 1790 to coincide with the one-year anniversary of the fall of the Bastille, presents a radically different picture of the queen. Here, she is surrounded by symbols of the new France, the (soon-to-be officially a) constitutional monarchy founded in the principles of popular sovereignty and equality. She is no longer Marie Antoinette, Queen of France—she is Marie Antoinette, Queen of the French. Almost everything she wears is now a representation of this new France, rather than a representation of her high station as Queen. Her dress, free from ornamentation aside from what appears to be a gold pin or a clasp in the center of her bodice, is now white, red and blue, the new national colors. Atop her head she wears, instead of a crown, a tricolour cockade, fastened with a pin and an assortment of stiff and loose tricolour feathers. The only part of her wardrobe not represented in tricolour is an thin headband and a small ornamental fan pinned to her cockade. The garland made from symbols of monarchy is now replaced by a tricolour ribbon with the inscription: Cocarde Nationale, prise le 13 Juillet 1789.

Re: Marie-Antoinette in Art
From Vive la Reine. http://vivelareine.tumblr.com/post/41017549067
This is my favorite portrait of the King and the Queen. It is an artist's rendition of the moment of their parting part it captures what their relationship had become. They have become one soul. Antoinette's hand rests over Louis' heart. His hand rests upon hers. Their eyes meet and in that shared glance is everything they want to say to each other. Her profile is that of an eagle's; it is as if she is infusing him with strength.
Re: Marie-Antoinette in Art
I visited the town Kufstein during my ski trip last week. They have a little memorial of our Queen with two miniatures and a short biography. I don't know why, I have no idea if she ever visited Kufstein - maybe on her way to France, but who knows. (You can find suprisingly many pictures and busts of her in Austrian museums and palaces, anyway.) So I took this photo for my collection I've never seen this one before, but she's soooo beautiful here...
Sorry, it's a bit too large...

Beautiful! (People can right click on the picture and then click on "View Image" and it shows up fine!)
Re: Marie-Antoinette in Art
I believe that this engraving is supposed to portray Antoinette's poise at her trial, but I couldn't find any surrounding information....
