Edith of Wessex was the daughter of King Edward the Confessor's nemesis, Earl Godwin. She was a pawn in her father's game and he married her to Edward for political reasons. Edith and Edward never had any children, causing upheaval upon Edward's death, leading to the Norman Conquest of England.
